How To Be A Pro Photographer
It's a slow process to become a professional photographer, therefore photography assistants are fortunate in that they get to work with a variety of photographers and pick up skills and habits. Normally, you wouldn't get that opportunity by attending workshops or surfing YouTube. Assisting photographers accelerates your learning, gives you the chance to work with stylists and art directors you meet along the route, and allows you to advance to the professional level much more quickly. A quick way to get to the top is I used to compile pictures of different subjects and styles that I wished I had in my portfolio into a folder, then chat to a stylist about working together once a week for test shoots to make my ideas a reality. This is how I created my web portfolio, and guess what? It was successful. By focusing and emailing agencies, marketing and advertising firms, as well as direct to businesses that would want my services, I was able to get regular paying customers. I did this by sending a brief email outlining my services and including a link to my website and then calling them directly to introduce myself. You can also specialise in a particular subject and market that service. I concentrated on food, product, interior, lifestyle, and portrait photography so that I had a greater chance of keeping myself busy with paying jobs. This approach was so successful that over the course of four years, I put together 40 workshop videos, built a channel so that you could see and learn what happens during a real shoot, along with detailed instructions on how the final photographs were produced.
